This delicious vegan Crispy tofu is quick and easy to make and is high in plant-based protein, making it a healthy addition to salads, vegetable dishes and stir fry’s. The tofu is made crispy by coating it in a light homemade batter adding some panko breadcrumbs and then baked in the oven. This crunchy tofu recipe requires just 7 simple ingredients and is ready in under 15 minutes.
When done right, tofu can be a delicious and healthy addition to any meal and it makes an excellent meat replacement due to its high protein content. This is why Tofu is often used in vegan recipes as it is high in plant-based protein, low in fat and has zero cholesterol. However, if eaten on its own, is often tasteless and has a spongy texture which puts many people off trying again. But once you know how to make tofu crispy you can add it to many different dishes.
I have tried many different methods to make my tofu crispy, but have found this panko breadcrumbed tofu to be my favourite yet as you don’t need quite as much oil to fry it in.
Crispy tofu goes well with salads, roast vegetables and stir fry dishes such as Vegan Udon which is a Japanese style noodle dish.
HOW TO MAKE CRISPY TOFU
Crispy tofu is simple to make and can be added to most dishes for some extra plant-based protein, flavour or texture.
To make this quick and easy crispy tofu recipe, you will need 7 simple ingredients, including the tofu its self.
- Firm tofu or extra firm – Preferably organic and non-GMO
- Panko Breadcrumbs
- Cornflour or arrowroot
- Garlic Powder
- Soy Sauce or Tamari
- Olive Oil or sesame oil
This crispy tofu works best with firm or extra firm tofu, that has been pressed, either in a paper towel, tea towel or tofu press until any excess moisture has been squeezed out of the tofu. This is what helps the tofu to taste crispy and crunchy once cooked.
When purchasing tofu, it is important to choose organic tofu where possible that is free from GMO’S, pesticides and other carcinogens.
HOW TO PREPARE TOFU
Prepare your firm / extra firm tofu by squeezing any excess moisture out of it. You can do this by placing it between two paper towels and placing a heavy object on top. Alternatively, you can use a tofu press. The more moisture you can draw from the tofu, the crispier it will get.
Next, slice the tofu into cubes around 1-2cm square and set aside.
Prepare the coating for the tofu by placing the garlic powder, salt and pepper, cornflour and panko breadcrumbs into a large bowl and mix well until combined.
Toss the tofu cubes in the tamari and oil in a separate bowl and then transfer to the other bowl with the coating mixture and toss the cubes until they are evenly coated.
Place the tofu cubes on a lined baking tray and bake until golden brown (around 20-25 minutes)
